Luxe pods & lodges on the Welsh Borders

Set among woodland and meadow, Cynefin Retreats is an immersive destination offering an incredible indoor-outdoor getaway experience for you and your beloved furry friend. Here, the true luxury is living and breathing this idyllic Welsh borders landscape, from the comfort of your handcrafted accommodation.

Offering the ultimate in contemporary living, our four 1-bed pods and trio of 2-bed lodges are designed for those seeking a unique escape in a stunning countryside setting, yet only three miles from the historic market town of Hay-on-Wye.

Dogs are not just accepted here, they’re wholeheartedly welcomed. As dog owners ourselves, we know that the best breaks are those where all members of the family are catered for whether big, small or furry.

Hay-on-Wye accommodation
Cynefin (pronounced kin-ev-in) is a Welsh word with no direct English translation, meaning ‘rooted in place’, somewhere we instinctively belong.

The Luxe-Pods

Designed for couples and their pooch, our four luxe-pods offer stylish, modern living, with iconic curved walls to the rear and wall-to-ceiling sliding glass doors to the front, with uninterrupted views to the countryside.

Each pod features an en-suite bedroom with romantic floating bed, adjoining a spacious, open-plan kitchen-living area. With both a wood burning stove and luxurious underfloor heating, uniform warmth throughout the pod is guaranteed. An adjoining cloak room for boots, coats, dog throwers, leads, and towels ensures your pod can remain clean and uncluttered.

Sliding glass doors open to a partially covered wooden deck, with private hot tub enabling an easy transition between indoor and outdoor living across the seasons, whatever the weather. Beyond the deck is a spacious terrace with dining and lounging furniture. Each pod has a bespoke fire-pit with BBQ grill perfect for sizzling sausages and toasting marshmallows.

The Luxe-Lodges

Perfect for families or groups of friends, our trio of lodges offer spacious bedrooms and open plan living areas to enjoy time together, whilst having space to breathe.

Built using pioneering wood technologies, the iconic lines of the timber clad lodges reflect the local environment, with each one offering privacy with views of the surrounding countryside and plenty of outside space.

Each lodge features two spacious bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, each with the option of either a super king size bed or twins. The family bathroom has a standalone bath and separate shower. From the open plan kitchen, living and dining room you look out through expansive glass doors to a private decking with your own hot tub, and beyond to the spacious terrace with fire pit and BBQ grill.

Similar to the pods, there is a separate room to keep any bulky, wet or muddy items. You’ll also find a washing machine for your comfort and ease should you end up covered with muddy paw prints after a countryside adventure.

Dog-lovingly Friendly

As avid dog-lovers, we understand that your dog is a member of the family, and VIPs (Very Important Pooches!) are welcomed at Cynefin Retreats with as much warmth as their owners.

You and your canine companion will have a tail-wagging time exploring the local area and the wealth of walking opportunities nearby. Our woodland adjoins the public footpath leading directly onto the Wye Valley Walk – a fabulous path that leads directly to Hay-on-Wye, the ‘Town of Books’, famous for its Literary Festival. Beyond your doorstep, The Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons are nearby which are fantastic for scenic dog walks.

If more action is what you’re after, wild swimming, canoeing, trekking, and cycling are all possible with your pooch in tow. Our pre-departure pack is full of activity ideas.

We welcome one dog per pod and up to two well-behaved dogs per lodge for a small fee.

We do have a few simple pooch-related rules in order to ensure that Cynefin Retreats is an idyllic holiday destination for everyone:

  • We accept one dog per luxe-pod, for a small fee of £30, and up to two dogs per luxe-lodge for a fee of £30 for one dog and £45 for two dogs.
  • Please keep your dog(s) out of the bedrooms. For our two-storey luxe-lodges, this means we ask that dogs are not allowed upstairs. A stairgate will be provided which we ask that you to keep closed at all times.
  • Ideally, we ask that dogs are not allowed on the sofa. If your dog is accustomed to sofa snuggles, please use the blanket provided(s).
  • Do not leave your dog unattended in any of our properties – new environments can cause much distress, particularly on warm days when our accommodations do heat up if the windows and doors are not open.
  • Any dog mess must be cleared up and disposed of immediately, either into the hedge using the shovel provided, or using dog mess bags. Dog mess bags can be disposed of in the large black rubbish bins by our car park. Please do not leave them behind for our housekeeping team to throw away.
  • There is livestock in the fields surrounding Cynefin Retreats. Please ensure your dog is supervised and kept under control at all times when in and around Cynefin Retreats.
  • When taking your dog for a walk, please follow the country code and keep to the public footpath at all times. Please keep your dog on a lead when in close vicinity to livestock.
  • When returning from muddy walks, please use the hose provided to rinse muddy paws. A communal warm water hose is located on the building by the car park, or a cold water hose can be found on the other side of your privacy screen by the hot tub. Please use the towel provided to dry off wet paws before allowing your dog back inside.
  • Dogs must be older than 12 months – no playful pups, sorry, even if they are very cute!
  • You will be liable in the unlikely event of any damage or if excess cleaning is required as a result of your dog(s).

We know that dogs can be quite picky about their home comforts so we trust that you’ll bring their bed, blankets, and food with you. However, you’ll find water bowls and food bowls in each property for you to use during your stay, along with a towel for drying muddy paws, and blanket(s) for covering the sofa/armchairs.

Sit back and relax...

By day, breakfast in bed watching the sun come up on a crisp winter’s morning, take a picnic lunch in the meadow on a balmy summer’s day, or supper on the terrace watching the sunset.

By night, cosy up on the sofa with the log burner roaring and a good book in hand, or embrace outdoor living toasting marshmallows by the fire pit and drinking prosecco in the hot tub looking up at the stars.

Throughout the day, across the seasons, let this extraordinary landscape soothe the senses and rejuvenate the spirit.

Best of all is the great big cinema screen that is the wall of windows. You might struggle to get out of bed in the morning, when you can just lie there and count the clouds.

“The wonderful world of Cynefin”

Booked this for my girlfriend’s birthday on a whim after liking the look of the cabins, the reality was far better than expected, it was wonderful, beautifully designed and lovely to stay in. The hot tub was excellent and the view in the morning was sensational, I hope to be back.

“Absolutely amazing minbreak”

We had a fantastic time at the retreat, we were lovely and cosy and had more than everything we needed. The dog loved it too. Will definitely be visiting again. My advice is to just book as you will LOVE it! Perfect place to de-stress.

You'll feel immersed in the uninterrupted views, though this is glamping with an emphasis on the 'glam': there’s underfloor heating, well kitted out kitchens, and hot tubs
